About School Board

The Board of Education consists of five elected board members who each serve four-year terms representing districts across Fayette County. The Chair and Vice Chair are elected by fellow board members, while the superintendent serves as secretary to the board and oversees the district’s daily operations and personnel. Together, the board is responsible for setting districtwide policies, priorities, direction, and spending to fulfill Fayette County Public School’s mission “to create a collaborative community that ensures all students achieve at high levels and graduate prepared to excel in a global society.”

What does a FCPS Board Member do?
Members of the school board work together  as a governing body to set policy, establish priorities, oversee district finances, and provide accountability for the school district. They review information, ask questions, listen to community members, and make essential decisions that impact the success of the students and families of Fayette County Public Schools.

One of the board’s most important responsibilities is financial oversight. The school board identifies the budgetary goals and priorities, reviews current financial statements/reports, and approves the annual budget. The superintendent develops the budget based on the board’s priorities and directives, provides the board with current and projected financial information, and implements the annual budget.

Per Kentucky State Law, the board is also responsible for the annual evaluation of the superintendent. Superintendent evaluations are based on several areas of leadership, including instructional, cultural, collaborative, strategic, managerial, and human resource leadership. The annual evaluations are posted to the public, and can be accessed on the FCPS website.

NOTE:  Unlike some major cities, the Fayette County Board of Education is separate from the Mayor’s Office and the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government (LFUCG) Council.
